Music and Love at MLK Day of Service Volunteer & Resource Fair 2026

Today I had the opportunity to represent Music and Love at the MLK Day of Service Volunteer & Resource fair, where different groups and organizations came together to advertise what they do. It was such a fun and meaningful experience, and I really enjoyed getting to be part of it. At our stand, I explained to a lot of people what Music and Love is and what we do. I talked about our mission and how we use music to spread positivity and connect with others. It was really nice seeing people genuinely interested and asking questions about our work. By the end of the fair, we had gained new followers and subscribers, which felt really rewarding. We also gained some volunteers who were interested in helping out with Music and Love, which was super exciting. It made me feel like what we’re doing actually matters and that people really want to be part of it. One of my favorite parts of the day was walking around with my peers and looking at what other people were advertising. There were so many creative and inspiring ideas, and it was cool to see how passionate everyone was about their own projects. We created stuffed animals for foster care, made cards for the Children's Inn at NIH, and packed food and daily necessities for those in need. Overall, the indoor vendor fair was an amazing experience. It helped us spread the word about Music and Love. To grow our community, and connect with many new people. (Reported by Esther Tian)

Concert at Raphael House

On a cloudy day in January, Music and Love visited Raphael House. Caitlyn opened the concert with a beautiful concerto on the piano, followed by Candice playing an upbeat song called "Happy Farmer." Isis performed an elegant piece on the pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument, called "Dance of Yi People." The pipa made a wonderful sound. Frankie played "Lunar Eclipse," a piece that sounded as mysterious as a real lunar eclipse. Ethan performed Etude in A Minor by Sibelius, a fast paced and exciting piece. Alex Mao performed Humoresque on the cello. The deep bass notes from the cello filled the room with a comforting feeling. Finally, Faith and Esther performed a duet of Libertango, a haunting melody, but invigorating all the same.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the concert today as always. Music and Love will perform again soon to bring smiles to our community! (Reported by Selena Ritschel)

On a Sunday morning, Music and Love performed for the people at the Manorhouse. The people who came to perform played a large range of musical pieces. Some played exciting and fast-paced songs, like Prokofiev Toccata Op. 11. Meanwhile others specialized in emotion and feeling, like Time to Say Goodbye. The audience greatly appreciated our musical talent, with rounding applause at the end. The musical instruments were also very interesting too. Annie Kang brought a full-size harp, while Ethan Xing vocalized his pieces. Overall, I learned a lot about music that makes me feel appreciative about sharing positive feelings through musical pieces. (Reported by Noah Chen)

Public Speaking & Music Showcase Concert at Brightview Fallsgrove

The Saturday Music and Love concert was a very special one. In addition to performing music, we also needed to tell the story behind our music. The purpose of this was to help us improve our public speaking and communication skills. My friend Allie went first. She introduced herself, her music piece, and her story about music and love. It was really touching when she said that the most important thing is to share music with others. I performed after Allie and introduced my piece, Haydn Sonata in F Major. When I told the audience that the composer Haydn loved to surprise his listeners and that they should be careful of sudden changes in the music, everyone laughed. One of the most special performances was the pipa piece Happy Day by Sihong. A pipa looks like a bass, but it is rounder and a bit smaller. Sihong introduced this unique instrument to the audience, and they all loved it. At the end of the concert, Allie and I went on stage again to interact with the audience. It was a fantastic opportunity to improve our speaking skills. We asked the seniors if they had any questions, and they were very happy that we had performed for them. They even gave us lemon-flavored cookies when we left. In conclusion, today’s performance was a big success. (Reported by Grace Zhou)

Concert at Raphael House

On this windy Sunday afternoon, we brought some beautiful music to the Raphael House. Many kids came to play music together, and it felt warm and happy inside even though it was windy outside. There were many different kinds of music. Some pieces were classic music, like Fur Elise, In the Hall of the Mountain King, and Bach Partita No. 2. Some music was folk music, like Little Mushroom Girl played on the pipa. Some music sounded very rhythmic and exciting, and some music had long notes that sounded calm and confident, with a strong mother tone that made me feel peaceful. I listened to my friends carefully and learned a lot from them. Moreover, I met two old friends at the concert today, Helena and Michael, and I was very happy to see them again. This concert made me feel proud to be a music player and share love through music. (Reported by Timmy Li)

Concert at Cogir of Potomac

Today, our music group visited Cogir of Potomac to share our music and love with everyone. All the performances went very smoothly, and the piano pieces were especially touching and made people feel calm and happy. One very special moment was when Sihong played a Chinese traditional instrument called the pipa. Many people in the audience were curious about the instrument and the kind of music it could play. Sihong also showed the pipa to the audience and explained it, which helped everyone learn more about this beautiful instrument. The song sounded amazing, and Sihong’s fingers danced on the strings, creating beautiful and unique sounds. At the end of the concert, Esther and Faith performed a violin duet to close the performance. It was a wonderful ending to the event. When the concert was finished, the audience gave us loud applause. We could see smile s, love, and happiness on everyone’s faces. It was a meaningful and joyful experience for all of us. (Reported by Candice Xu)

Concert at Brightview Great Falls VA

Today’s concert featured a well-rounded program spanning many pieces from a variety of musical periods. The opening performance of Sarabande from French Suite No. II and Moonlight Sonata set an expressive tone, and the seniors listened attentively, many excited to listen to the concert. Another performer followed with a concertino, a piece full of contrast between sharp, lively sections and soft, melodious passages. The audience responded warmly to these changes in mood, and several seniors reacted, clearly engaged. The performances later further impressed the listeners with its speed and precision. The performance concluded with an advanced, rich set featuring Grieg’s Sonata, Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata, and Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20. The seniors rewarded the performers with long, heartfelt applause, and many expressed appreciation afterward for the music and the dedication of the young musicians. Overall, the concert created a familiar, uplifting experience for both performers and audience alike. (Reported by Angelina Lin)

Concert at Byron House

On a chilly, winter day we had a performance at the Byron house. Today was extra special because my Girl Scout troop, 34249, was there to watch and perform! First was Alex performing “Souvenir de Sarasate”. Troop 34249 was very impressed with her violin playing. Shortly afterwards, troop 34249 had a Choir, performing “Let It Snow”. The seniors were very impressed by their performance and sang along.  Bella, from my Girl Scout troop, performed a magic trick short after, which was never done before.  At the end of the performance, Troop 34249 handed out homemade cards, and gave them to the seniors.  Smiles filled faces as the seniors opened their cards. It was a great performance, and our Girl Scout troop really enjoyed it as well.
