Concert at Raphael House

11/17/2024

In the deep depths of fall, through all the vibrant foliage, lies the senior center of Raphael House. Music and Love had a spectacular performance today here at one of our favorite senior centers and we had some outstanding pieces played by our members. The sound of pianos, violins, oboes, and guitars drifted through the fall landscape. The clear sharp sound of the violin synchronized with the hopping of the busy squirrels, the piano sounded like swirling leaves, the oboe felt like a gentle breeze, and the guitar felt like the warmth we brought to all the seniors today. At the end, we left with happiness knowing that we have brought a little bit of fall magic into the seniors’ lives (and also Isabella’s). (Reported by Aric Deng)

On a cool, cloudy afternoon, with brown and yellow leaves scattered across the ground, the talented musicians of Music and Love visited Raphael House for a heartfelt performance. The event opened with Allie Rui’s evocative rendition of a Chopin Nocturne, stirring deep emotions in the audience. Gabriel Zhou followed with a moving Kangding Love Song, enchanting listeners with its beauty. The performance by Music and Love today was loved by the seniors, who responded with enthusiastic applause and cheers. What a memorable afternoon Music and Love had created! Concert at Brightview Great Falls

Music and Love’s concert at Brightview had an overall theme of a lively, yet dreamy vibe. The event, held in the intimate setting of the community's living room, offered an enriching musical experience that captivated both the residents and performers alike. The fall atmosphere drifted throughout the room from large french windows, calming the seniors.
The program opened up with “Sunshower,” a piano piece with crisp, flowy notes and a light, airy texture.  It was a fitting introduction to the concert's overall theme of a lively yet dreamy atmosphere, creating a serene space for the residents to relax and reflect. Next, Sigrid performed a lovely piece: “Minuet in G by Beethoven. The delicate, dance-like rhythm of the piece and Sigrid’s cuteness made most of the seniors smile and tap their fingers on their legs. They encourage the four-year-old by clapping enthusiastically at the end of her performance. Sophia also played wonderfully, her technique and dedication to music reflected the pieces she chose and how expressively she played them. Idea 10, by Gibran Alcocer was a haunting and intricate piece, rich in emotional depth, which seemed to leave the audience in a kind of thoughtful stillness. Gavotte in D Major lifted the spirits once more with its buoyant, Baroque dance rhythm. The playful, lively melody and bright, sharp accents provided a welcome burst of energy, lightening the mood as the audience engaged with each other. Lastly, Bach Sinfonia No. 11 created a graceful and enriching experience for the seniors because of its gliding tone.
Overall,  The Music and Love concert not only provided an enriching and joyful experience, but it also deepened the connection between the volunteers and the residents, proving once again that music has the extraordinary power to soothe, inspire, and bring people together. On a warm bright November afternoon, 27 musicians from Music and Love performed at NIH Music in the Atrium program. We were welcomed by the Clinical Center staff and patients. We started things off with Julianne, Vera, and Grace performing Bach Musette and The Happy Farmer. They were followed by an impressive performance by Stephen Chen, performing Caprice Espagnol Op.37 and Prelude and Fugue BWV847. The audience clapped very loudly after this outstanding performance. We ended with the PS ensemble consisting of Allie, Jacqueline, and Victoria. They performed Trepak and Dramatic Essay. We are looking forward to coming back and performing again at this wonderful venue. (Reported by Eric Zhang)

Today, Music and Love went to the Byron House, and it was super fun! Daniel and Eileen kicked things off with a duet and played Concerto in A minor. Then, we had some awesome trio performances: Victoria, Jacqueline, and Allie played the famous Ode to Joy, while Allie, Jacqueline, and Michelle did a great job with Trepak. Lastly, Julianne, Grace, and Vera played the Happy Farmer. Guess what? Jake came back after being away for a long time, and he played the beautiful Fur Elise. After all the performances, the seniors were so excited and went up to congratulate us! It was really cool to see how happy the music made them! (Reported by Allie Rui)
